If you're planning to use a TENS machine during labour, knowing where to put the electrode pads is one of the most useful things to practice before your due date.
For labour, TENS pads are commonly positioned around the lower back, where they can provide stimulation while you remain mobile and change positions.
For labour TENS, the electrode pads are generally placed on the lower back. The exact placement depends on its instructions, so always follow the manufacturers instructions supplied with your device.
A common arrangement is to position the pads in pairs around the lower back rather than placing them directly over the spine.
Labour contractions care cause discomfort across the abdomen, pelvis and lower back.
TENS machines used during labour have traditionally been studied with electrodes placed on the back. The safety of applying the TENS electrode pads directly onto the abdomen, near to the baby, has not been studied.
Our TENS machine hire includes four new electrode pads. These are used in pair with the two lead wires that are also supplied with the TENS machine. It is your choice whether you use two pads with one lead wire, or all four pads with two lead wires.
1. Make sure your skin is clean and dry
Before applying the electrode pads, make sure the skin on your lower back is clean, completely dry, free from oils, lotions and creams. This is important because these products can make it difficult for the electrode pads to stick properly.
2. Find the area of your lower back where the pads will sit
For labour TENS, the electrode pads are commonly placed across the lower back. Avoid placing them over your spine.
If you're unable to read this are, it is recommended to ask your partner or midwife for assistance
3. Position all four pads according to instructions
A labour TENS setup uses four electrode pads connected through the two lead wired. The pads are positioned in pairs, not overlapping or touching each other, and having good contact with the skin. We recommend two pads above your underwear line, and the other two pads below your bra strap.
4. Connect the lead wires
Once the pads are positioned, connect the lead wires to the electrode pads and the TENS machine as instructed. Its a good idea to connect everything before labour so you already know how the machine works and can become familiar with
5. Turn the machine on at a comfortable intensity
Once everything is connected, switch the machine on. Start at a comfortable intensity. The TENS should produce a noticeable tingling or buzzing sensation, but it shouldn't be painful. everyone experiences the sensation differently, so there isn't one "correct" intensity.
6. Increase the intensity gradually as needed
As you become comfortable with the sensations, you can gradually increase the intensity to a level that feels useful and comfortable for you. During labour, we recommend you increase the stimulation as the contraction builds.
7. Use the boost function during contractions
If your Elle TENS Model has the boost button, this can be used during your contractions. The boost setting provides a continuous sensation. Once to contraction has finished, pressing the boost button again will take the sensation back to the burst setting, which is intermittent sensations
8. Check the pads during labour
As you move around during labour, check occasionally that the electrode pads are still securely attached. Movement, sweat and moisture can affect how well the pads adhere to the skin. If they start lifting, switch the machine off and adject the pads accordingly
Good skin preparation makes a big difference. Before applying the electrode pads:
Make sure your skin is clean
Make sure the skin is completely dry
Don't apply moisturiser, oil or body lotion underneath the pads
Avoid placing the pads over irritated or damaged skin
Store reusable pads according to the manufacturers instructions
If your electrode pads lose their adhesion, try place a very small amount of water onto the pad and then reapplying. If this does not work, and they still appear to be not sticking well, they may need replacing.
TENS Hire Perth also stocks replacement electrode pads if you need another set. Extra sets can also be purchased at the time of hiring
One of the advantages of using a portable TENS machine is that you can generally move around while using it. You an walk, change positions and use different labour positions while keeping the handheld unit with you. This can make the TENS machine particularly useful as part of a birth plan focused on movement and maintaining control.
We recommend to keep an eye on the placement of your pads if you intend to be active during labour, as movement can cause them to move and become less effective.
The short answer here is: no
TENS machines should not be used in or around water. This is during to the electrical signals created by the device. Electricity and water are not a safe combination.
Don't wait until labour - the last thing you want to be during while in labour is learning how to apply the electrode pads, where the use them and how to operate the TENS machine.

How does a TENS machine work?
1. Electrical Impulses Block Pain Signals:
2. Gate Control Theory:
3. Endorphin Release:
4. Modulating Pain Perception:
5. Adjustable Settings for Personalized Relief:
In summary, a TENS machine works by using electrical impulses to interfere with the transmission of pain signals to the brain, triggering the release of natural painkillers, and modulating the perception of pain. It offers a non-invasive and drug-free approach to pain relief, which can be especially valuable during labour and various other pain-inducing conditions.

time is required or visit this page to purchase more time.
Will my electrode pads stay sticky?
The electrode pads provided are designed to be re-usable, meaning you can take them off and then reapply them. Just be sure to pop them back onto the film they arrived attached to when you are not wearing them. Residual oil or moisture on your skin will start to erode the stickiness of your pads, so if you are in and out of the shower several times, or sweating, make sure to dry your back completely before reapplying.
You can 'revive' the stickiness of your pads by brushing over with a damp fabric cloth. Additional electrode pads are also available for purchase.
