Introduction

If you're planning a water birth at home, one of the first questions is usually, "what do I actually get when I hire a birth pool?" The answer matters, because the last thing you want in the weeks before your due date is to discover you're missing a part and have tp run to Bunnings.

At TENS Hire Perth, every birth pool hire is a complete kit. Here's what's in the box, what each item does, and a few tips from a midwife-owned business on using it with confidence.

What's in the hire kit?

The Birth Pool

The birth pool is a regular Birth Pool is a Box, a professional- grade inflatable pool designed for comfort and supportive during labour. It's a light blue pool made from 0.55 mm Eco PVC that is free from cadmium, lead and latex.

A few details that can help you picture it in your space:

Internal size: 142 cm x 114 cm with an internal height of 69cm

External size: 195 cm x 163 cm

Water depth: 45 to 58 cm

Capacity: about 650 L when filled to 80%

Comfort features: an inflated floor of 5cm, a built-in inflatable seat and 6 handles on the outside for positioning and moving it

A new, single use liner

Every hire includes a new liner, and it's single person use, so you can rest assured that it has not been used before you. It gets thrown away after each use. The liner goes inside the pool after it has been inflated but before you start filling it with water. It keeps the water separate from the pool itself, which supports hygiene and contamination between hires. The liner is made from 0.20 mm Eco PVC, and is free from cadmium, lead and latex.

A few important things to note:
The pool is in three rings. For ease of putting on the liner, we recommend inflating the bottom ring first, then the middle ring, then half inflating the top ring before putting on the liner. Once the liner is in place, continue fully inflating the top ring

Electric air pump

Inflating the birth pool takes around 10 minutes with the electric air pump. We recommend inflating in the following order: 5cm floor, inflatable seat, bottom ring, middle ring, half inflate the top ring, position the liner, then completely inflate the top ring. Please note if a longer power cord is required, this is not supplied with the birth pool hire

Blue food-grade water hose

The blue food grade hose is for filling the pool with clean water only. Please do not use it to empty the dirty water from the pool at the end of use. using it for draining creates a contamination risk for the next family who hires the birth pool

Tap connector

The tap connector attaches your hose to your kitchen or bathroom tap. Depending on your home, you might find it works better to connect the hose to your washing machine taps instead, as the tap connector isn't compatible with gooseneck taps or taps wider than 30mm. Trying both before labour starts is the best way to find out what suits your plumbing

Thermometer

A thermometer is included with the birth pool hire so you can monitor and maintain a comfortable water temperature while you're using the pool. Your midwife can guide you on the right water temperature for you, and will be monitoring while she is with you during labour. The Thermometers we provide are aquarium thermometers . They are digital thermometers designed the reach the bottom of a large vessel of water. Place the probe in the bottom of the pool and the monitor on the outside (to avoid it from getting wet)

Comprehensive Instructions

The birth pool hire comes with detailed guidance on setting up the pool and looking after it. If its your first time with a birth pool, the instructions walk you through each step of the setup so you aren't guessing

Submersible Pump

The submersible pump provided is used to remove the dirty water from the birth pool after use. Do this by placing the pump into the water and attaching a garden hose to the top of it. The pump will turn on automatically when connected to power, so be sure to put the pump into the water before plugging it into the power. We recommend draining the pool water into the garden if it is nearby. If not, then you can drain the water into the shower or bath. e sure to weight the end of the garden hose with a very wet towel to avoid spraying water around the room. Please note garden hoses to empty the pool are not provided with the hire.

Out top tips before your birth

  • Do a trial run: Inflate the pool and get familiar with each accessory before labour. You'll feel more confident, and so will whoever is helping you
  • Measure your space and think about where the water will come from and how the water will be emptied after use
  • Talk to your healthcare team. We recommend discussing your birth plan with your midwife or doctor to confirm if a water birth is suitable for your circumstances
  • Remove your TENS machine before entering the water: If you're using a TENS machine during labour, take it off before you enter any form of water as it is an electrical device
